history

Oberau was first mentioned in a fiefdom in 1400 , according to which the Bamberg citizens Conrad, Laurentius and Balthasar Haller from the Bamberg bishop had, among other things, the farm “in the Awe prope Staffelstein”. In 1422, the Bamberg bishop Friedrich freed everyone who belonged to the Staffelstein office and were subordinate to the cathedral chapter, including "the courts in Obernaw" from his court in Lichtenfels. In 1508 there was a card entry with “Oberau” and in 1612 a mention in the parish Ebensfeld with “Obern Aw”. In 1721 two farms "Oberaw" were owned by the heirs of Dr. Johann Friedrich Weiß mentioned. In 1801 Oberau was described as a farm with two owners, consisting of two parts, each with a house, barns and outbuildings, which lies not far from the Main between Nedensdorf and Staffelstein, belongs to the Staffelstein office and is parish there.

In 1854 Oberau consisted of the front Oberauhof of the State Council and District President von Stenglein and the rear Oberauhof of the royal public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal of Middle Franconia , August Candidus Geiger. In 1862 Oberau belonged to Staffelstein and to the newly created Bavarian District Office Staffelstein .

In 1864, Friedrich Ernst August married Freiherr von Dungern (1839-1912), son of the Nassau State Minister Emil August von Dungern , Auguste Souchay de la Duboissière (1842-1936), daughter of the Frankfurt city politician and Reich Commissioner Eduard Souchay . With financial support from Eduard Souchay, they acquired the Oberau estate in 1866 and had the castle built from 1872 to 1873.

In 1871 Oberau had 13 residents and nine buildings. The Catholic school and the responsible Catholic parish were in Staffelstein, two kilometers away. In 1900 30 people lived in the hamlet in three residential buildings and in 1925 26 people and in three residential buildings. The evangelical parish responsible was in Herreth, 5.0 kilometers away .

In 1950 Oberau had 75 residents and four residential buildings. The estate was located in the middle of a wetland that was drained after 1945. Extensive gravel quarrying from 1961 to 1975 created the central lake around the estate. In 1970 the hamlet had twelve inhabitants, and in 1987 it continued to have twelve residents, as well as two residential buildings with one apartment each.

On July 1, 1972, the Staffelstein district was dissolved and Oberau has been part of the Lichtenfels district since then .

The manor house includes a manor house, which was built in 1872 in the form of the Renaissance as a two-storey sandstone block with ornamental gables based on plans by FW Ludwig. A corresponding intermediate wing, an octagonal silo tower and a barn with stepped gables were built around 1900.

From the former rear Oberauhof there is a two-storey hipped roof building used as a residential building with a ground floor made of sandstone blocks and a half-timbered upper floor from the late 17th century, plastered in the middle 19th century.

A two-storey hipped roof building of the Althof is used as an administration building. It has a plastered half-timbered upper floor from the 17th century and was built over a late medieval core. The balcony extension dates from 1910.

There is also a private cemetery for the Evangelical Freiherr family von Dungern and their servants. Here also is Otto von Dungern-Oberau buried.
