Põltsamaa (German Oberpahlen ) is a town in the Estonian district of Jõgeva with 4666 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2010). Põltsamaa is considered the wine capital of Estonia. The Põltsamaa Castle is the only royal palace in Estonia.
Geography and traffic
The city of Põltsamaa is located on the river of the same name . It is surrounded by the rural community of the same name, Põltsamaa . The city is located on the main Tallinn-Tartu road ( Tallinn-Tartu maantee ), the main thoroughfare in Estonia.
history
On June 30, 1926, Põltsamaa were given city rights. During the Second World War , 75% of the city was destroyed. Põltsamaa was the capital of the district of the same name from 1950 to 1965.
Oberpahlen Castle
The Moche Church (Estonian Mõhu ) was first mentioned in a letter from the Pope in 1234. In 1272 Otto von Rodenstein began to build a fortification for the Teutonic Order on the Põltsamaa River , which was expanded into a castle in the course of the 14th century . Their church became Moche.
During the Livonian War in 1570, Duke Magnus , Bishop of Ösel and Wiek (now Saaremaa and Läänemaa ), became King of Livonia. On behalf of the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible, he was supposed to conquer the Swedish Reval (now Tallinn ) and moved into Oberpahlen Castle. But the conquest of Reval failed. Magnus was the only king who ever ruled from Estonia.
1750, the castle became the property of Woldemar Johann von Lauw, who in a rococo - Castle with large surrounding park had it rebuilt.
The castle burned down on June 14, 1941. The church mayor Herbert Kuurme received permission from the Soviet occupying power to rebuild the Moche church. Its equipment came from the church of the University of Tartu .
