The Oceania is a sailing ship used by the Polish Academy of Sciences as a research ship.

The ship was built under the hull number B-97/1 at the Stocznia Gdanska shipyard in Gdansk and delivered in October 1985. The design comes from the Polish shipbuilding engineer Zygmunt Choreń .
The ship has three decks. There is space on board for 12 crew members and 14 scientists. For day trips that do not last longer than twelve hours, 60 people are allowed on board.
The ship is primarily used for research work in the Baltic Sea , the North Sea and the North Atlantic and is at sea for around 240 days a year on average. It is approved for worldwide travel. In the respective winter months it is not allowed to enter the polar regions (over 66 ° 30 'N or 60 ° 00' S). The ship can stay at sea for up to a month.
Technical specifications
The ship can be powered by sails or a diesel engine. It is equipped with three sailing masts , each 32 meters high . The sail area is 280 m². The sails are set electronically. An MTU diesel engine (type: 12V 2000 M60) with a 600 kW cable is available as the drive motor . The maximum speed indicated is 12 knots , the cruising speed is 9 knots. A diesel generator set with an output of 110 kW is available for power generation. The ship is equipped with a bow thruster .
Furnishing
The ship has sonar and echo sounder systems and is equipped with various other devices for research work in the fields of hydrography, optics, acoustics, chemistry, biology and air particles. There are winches on deck for towing nets and equipment .
At the stern there is a swiveling rear boom that can lift 2.5 t. The ship is also equipped with two side arms. There is a hydraulically operated crane on deck that can lift 1 t.
The ship is equipped with four laboratory rooms. 15 cabins have been set up to accommodate the ship's crew and scientists.
