Odessa is the district capital and seat of the county seat of Ector County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located on the Texas and Pacific Railway , Interstate 20 , US Highway 80 and US Highway 385 in western Texas, is approximately 80 km from the southeast corner of New Mexico and has a total area of 95.5 km², of which 0.2 km² is water surface.

According to the 2000 census, 90,943 people lived here in 33,661 households and 23,697 families. The population density was 954.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 73.43% White, 5.88% African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 16.07% other ethnic groups. About 2.93% were mixed race and 41.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 33,661 households, 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6% of these were married couples living together. 14.5% were single mothers and 29.6% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were single households and there were people living in 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.21.
29.8% of the population were under 18 years old, 10.6% 18 to 24, 27.8% 25 to 44, 20.0% 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 88.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,209 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,869. Males had a median income of $ 31,115 versus $ 21,743 for females.
