The Oelze is a ten kilometer long left tributary of the Schwarza in the Thuringian Slate Mountains .
history
The river is first mentioned in a document from 1229 under the name Ůlsna. The word comes from Slavic and means "alder". Presumably there were numerous alder trees on the bank, on which the name was based. Over the centuries the name changed to the current name.
Heinrich II , Count von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg confirms the ownership of a part of the Black Forest to the Monastery of Volkenroda, which is bounded by the Bocksbach and the Oelze, among other things, and releases the monastery from customs on all transports.
course
The source of the Oelze is 758 m above sea level. NN approx. 500 m east of Kahlert , a settlement that belongs to Neustadt am Rennsteig . In its upper reaches the Oelze flows in an arc around the 737 m above sea level. NN high mountain Rotkopf through the Bettelmannstal in which it feeds the Altenfeld forest swimming pool. In its further course it flows through the place Altenfeld in a valley basin . At the end of Altenfeld in the direction of Katzhütte the Reischelbach flows into the Oelze. Below Altenfeld, the stream continues to flow in a south-easterly direction through the Oelzetal past two former cutting mills , the Unteren Klemmsteiner Mühle and the Leutnantsmühle , which used the water power of the Oelze to drive their mill wheels. The Oelze valley is spanned by the Oelzetalbrücke of the new Erfurt – Ebensfeld line, which was built here between 2007 and 2010. Below the Leutnantsmühle the Grundsbach flows into the Oelze. The river finally flows into the Schwarza in Oelze , a district of the municipality of Katzhütte.
