Ólafur Indriði Stefánsson (born July 3, 1973 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic handball coach and a former handball player who played for the Icelandic national team. The left-hander usually played in the right back space . He is considered a “living legend” in Iceland and is the bearer of the Icelandic Grand Knight's Cross .
Player career

After Ólafur won three Icelandic championships with Valur Reykjavík , he moved to German second division LTV Wuppertal in 1996 , with whom he made promotion to the first division in the first season . After another season, he moved to league rivals SC Magdeburg in 1998 , where he played until 2003. With Magdeburg, Ólafur Stefansson won several titles, the greatest success being winning the EHF Champions League in 2002. After moving to BM Ciudad Real , Ólafur was inducted into the Magdeburg Hall of Fame .
From 2003 to 2009 he played for BM Ciudad Real and won the Champions League with this club in 2006, 2008 and 2009. In the 2007/08 season he was top scorer with 96 goals together with Kiril Lazarov . Stefansson is also the most successful final scorer in the history of the Champions League with 68 goals.
For the 2009/10 season Ólafur moved to the German handball club Rhein-Neckar Löwen . After two seasons with the Lions he went to the Danish club AG København . From January 1, 2013 Ólafur Stefánsson played in Qatar at the Lekhwiya Sports Club in the capital Doha . With Lekhwiya he won the championship in 2013. Then he ended his career. In March 2015 he made his comeback in the EHF Champions League with the Danish first division club KIF Kolding .
National team
In the Icelandic national team, Ólafur played 330 international matches, in which he scored 1,570 goals. On June 7, 2014, Guðjón Valur Sigurðsson was surpassed as Icelandic record goal scorer. At the European Handball Championship in Sweden in 2002 he was the top scorer .
At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , he led his team to the greatest success in Icelandic sports history, the silver medal. For this he was honored by the President of the Republic with the Grand Knight's Cross on August 27, and his teammates received the Knight's Cross. In the summer of 2012 he again took part in the Olympic Games in London . After losing in the quarterfinals, he ended his international career. When Iceland had to complain about a few losses in the right back space in preparation for the 2013 World Cup, Ólafur Stefánsson was persuaded to make a comeback. After an old knee injury broke out, he also had to cancel his participation in the World Cup.

Coaching career
Ólafur Stefánsson coached the Icelandic first division team Valur Reykjavík in the 2013/14 season. From April 2015 he worked as assistant coach for the Icelandic national team. He has been a junior coach at Valur Reykjavík since summer 2019.
