Olga Savary (born May 21, 1933 in Belem , Pará , Brazil ; † May 15, 2020 in Teresópolis , Rio de Janeiro , Brazil) was a Brazilian poet , translator and narrator . She was the first important female voice in Brazilian erotic literature in the 20th century .

Live and act

Olga Savary was born in 1933 as the daughter of an immigrant Russian engineer and a Brazilian woman. She made her debut as a poet with the publication of her first volume of poetry in 1970; the following year she received her first prize, the Prêmio Jabuti , one of the most important literary prizes in Brazil.

Throughout her life she was friends with Carlos Drummond de Andrade and his muse . He wrote innumerable poems for and about them; they are lost to this day or have not yet been released by the heirs. Another good friend was the writer Ferreira Gullar .

She made a name for herself as a translator from English and above all from Spanish. She has translated, among others, Pablo Neruda , Julio Cortázar , Mario Vargas Llosa , Oscar Wilde , Carlos Fuentes , Jorge Luis Borges , Octavio Paz , Federico García Lorca , Jorge Semprun and Basho .

She pioneered the feminine and general literature of Brazil by being one of the first translators of haikus , whom she held in high regard, and the first female voice of erotic poetry in Brazil in the 20th century. In 1982 she published the volume Magma , which became a milestone in erotic poetry.

She has also worked as a novelist, art critic and journalist. In total, she published 20 books and won 40 literary prizes in Brazil. In 1994 she won the Prêmio Jabuti again, this time in the translation category.

As a poet she remained poor all her life and could not live from the few book sales; her work at the cultural office of the city of Rio de Janeiro only brought her a meager pension. Her role models as writers were above all TS Eliot , from whom she read a lot, and the Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa .

Savary was the mother of two sons, one of whom died of drugs; the other is a poet himself. She lived in Rio de Janeiro all her life . She died in May 2020, a week before her 87th birthday, as part of the corona pandemic of the consequences of the COVID-19 disease.

Quote

“In Brazil the poets starve to death because there is literature. And yet, we cannot live without it. "
