Oliver Helm , born Höfinghoff (born June 9, 1977 in Berlin-Friedrichshain ) is a German politician ; from 2011 to 2016 he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives . From June 2013 to May 2014 he was chairman of the faction of the Pirate Party . Shortly afterwards he left the party, but remained a member of the faction. In 2016 he joined the party Die Linke .

education and profession

Helm attended the Ratsgymnasium Rheda-Wiedenbrück and trained as an industrial clerk at the Ems vocational college in Rheda-Wiedenbrück. He then worked in a textile company and served eight years in the non-commissioned officer -Laufbahn in the supply service of the Bundeswehr as a regular soldier . Two missions took him to Kosovo . In 2007 he started studying business administration at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences .

Helm worked for the website of the Bild newspaper ( bild.de ) until the election for the Berlin House of Representatives in 2011 .

He has been married to Anne Helm since September 1, 2018 , whose name he adopted.

Political career

Helm joined the Pirate Party in 2009. On September 18, 2011, he was elected as a list candidate in the Berlin House of Representatives, in his candidacy as a direct candidate for the constituency of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg 4 , he achieved 12.3 percent. In the House of Representatives he was a member of the special committee “Water Contracts” .

At the beginning of 2013, Helm came under internal party criticism because of the employment of his partner as an employee. Helm then ended the two-year legal employment relationship that had begun with moving into the House of Representatives in May 2013. A month later, Helm was elected parliamentary group chairman for one year together with Alexander Spies .

On September 18, 2014, Helm resigned from the Pirate Party, but retained his mandate in the House of Representatives. In 2016 he joined the party Die Linke , still a member of the pirate faction , but remained a member of the pirate faction until the end of the legislature.

Helm is also anti-fascist and is a member of the Red Aid .

In April 2015, Helm was acquitted of the charge of attacking three men from the right-wing scene with flagpoles and glass bottles. The judge ruled that the statement of the main witness , the chairman of the NPD von Pankow, was "completely unbelievable".

After the election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 2016 , he left parliament in October 2016.

Since the end of 2016 he has been working as an advisor to the Pankow District Mayor, Sören Benn .
