The Olsberg near Olsberg in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis is 703.8  m above sea level. NHN high northern foothills of the Heidkopf ( 715.3  m ) in the Rothaar Mountains . It is the location of the Olsberg transmitter .

The Olsberg is located in the northern foothills of the Rothaargebirge directly southeast of the core town of Olsberg with its eastern location Gierskopp . Its peak rises 3 km west-north-west of Elleringhausen , 3.5 km north-north-west of Bruchhausen , 4 km north of Assinghausen and 3.3 km (as the crow flies ) north-north-east of Wulmeringhausen ; they are all districts of Olsberg. It belongs to a ridge running in a north-south direction, with the Olsberg in the north and the Heidkopf in the south, which separates the Ruhr from its eastern tributary Gierskoppbach .

The Olsberg belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Hochsauerländer Schluchtgebirge (333.8) to the natural area Ramsbecker ridge and gorges (333.81), with its northern flank in the main unit Sauerländer Senken (335 ) drops into the natural area Oberruhrgesenke (335.0).

Forest cover and protected areas

The Olsberg is mostly heavily forested , apart from the wind- thrown areas of its high elevations. On the eastern flank are parts of the nature reserve hillside forests of the Olsberg ( CDDA no. 329413, designated 2001, 1.68 km² in size). Olsberg transmitter

About 430 m south-southeast of the Olsberg summit is the Olsberg transmitter of the WDR . It is located a little below the summit of the south crest. Its transmission tower , built in 1984, is 58 m high. It is used to broadcast radio and DAB (digital radio).
