Ugo Frigerio, who had won the 10 km competition three days earlier, also took the lead over the shorter distance from the start. Before the start, Frigerio had given the conductor of the orchestra, who was in the interior, several pages of scores for pieces of music that were to be played during the race. When the orchestra was not playing at the right pace, the Italian went to the conductor during the race and complained. Then he continued the race and was the first to cross the finish line. The other medal ranks were occupied by other athletes than over 10,000 meters. The Australian George Parker came in second and Richard Remer, USA, came in third.
For Frigerio it was the second of three gold medals in his career.
