At the XI. At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin , a basketball competition was held.

A team consisted of up to 14 players, seven of whom could be nominated per game. The game was played on the tennis courts of the Reichssportfeld . What was new was that the stands with the basket were outside the playing field and were padded up to a height of two meters.

A game lasted 20 minutes twice and the tournament was run as a cup system. This means that a defeated team was not eliminated immediately, but was able to qualify again for the next round in the consolation round. The losers on the first day played among themselves in the consolation round the following day. The winners were involved again in the next round. 40 games were played during the Olympic basketball tournament.

In addition to Willi Daume, the German team also included Otto Gottwald, Josef Schäfer and Adolf Künzel. These four were officially registered participants, but they were not actively used.

Although Spain was in the Spanish Civil War and did not take part in the Summer Olympics in Berlin, the results were rated as "not run". The two games by Hungary and two games by the team from Peru were also rated as "not started". Peru did not play for the quarter-finals and the other placement games. The team was withdrawn to protest against the unjust treatment of the soccer team in the simultaneous Olympic tournament .
