Olympic qualification

In the Asian Zone, Group 1 identified its participants for the 1980 Summer Olympics in a tournament in Baghdad, Iraq . After two wins and two defeats, Syria took third place in the final table and originally missed qualifying for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . Due to the boycott of Iran ( Group 3 winners ) because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan , Syria was subsequently reported by the AFC for the Olympic tournament.

Games

After a defeat against Algeria and a draw against Spain, they had the theoretical chance in the last game to occupy the first two places in the table with a big win against defending champion GDR. After a clear defeat, however, they closed the group in fourth and dropped out of the tournament, in which they were the only team without their own goal.
