Olympic qualification

In the Asian Zone, Group 1 identified its participants for the 1980 Summer Olympics in a tournament in Baghdad, Iraq . Kuwait took second place in the final table due to the poorer goal difference to host Iraq. In the subsequent final they defeated Iraq and qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow ,

In the preliminary round, after a win against Nigeria and a draw against Colombia in the last game against Czechoslovakia, it was about first place in the group, which Czechoslovakia secured with a draw due to the better goal difference. Second they qualified for the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated from the tournament after losing to the host Soviet Union.
