This article deals with the selection of the GDR's soccer Olympics during the 1980 Summer Olympics .

As the title holder of the 1976 Summer Olympics , the GDR was automatically qualified.

Games
With two wins in the preliminary round against Algeria and Syria and a draw against Spain, the defending champion moved into the quarter-finals. There they won a victory against Iraq, which was followed by another victory against the host Soviet Union in the semifinals. In the final they lost to Czechoslovakia, which brought the GDR the silver medal.
