Olympic qualification

In the Asian Zone, Group 1 identified its participants for the 1980 Summer Olympics in a tournament in Baghdad, Iraq . The hosts took first place in the final table due to the better goal difference against Kuwait. In the subsequent final, however, they lost to Kuwait and originally missed qualifying for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow . Due to the boycott of Malaysia ( winner of Group 2 ) because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan , Iraq was subsequently registered by the AFC for the Olympic tournament.
