Games

With three wins in the preliminary round against Venezuela, Zambia and Cuba, the Soviet Union reached the quarter-finals. There they won a victory against Kuwait, which was followed in the semifinals by a defeat against the defending champion GDR. In the game for third place they won against Yugoslavia, which earned the hosts the bronze medal.
