Olympic qualification
In the preliminary group, Costa Rica clearly prevailed against Panama in the first round and defeated Guatemala in an additional play-off in the second round, which brought them into the decisive final round. In this one finished second behind the United States and thus qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow .

After two defeats against Iraq and Yugoslavia, Costa Rica could not reach the quarter-finals on the last day of the game. After the 3-0 defeat against Finland, the team finished fourth in the group and was eliminated from the tournament.
