The Olympus E-620 is a digital E-System - SLR the company Olympus . It is based on the Four Thirds Standard . With the E-620, Olympus has brought out an entry-level digital SLR camera for the first time that uses the features of the professional Olympus E-3 and Olympus E-30 . This includes a fully swiveling display, creative programs with art filters (as with the E-30), an integrated image stabilizer and the option of using an additional battery handle with a horizontal release (HLD-5). The E-620 is also the first DSLR camera to have illuminated buttons for operation in the dark. The E-620 uses the same sensor as the semi-professional E-30.

It was presented on February 24, 2009 and has been delivered since April 2009. It competed with models that were also presented in spring 2009, such as the Nikon D5000 and the Canon EOS 500D .

Innovations

Compared to its smaller sister E-420 and the slightly larger E-520, the E-620 has numerous major innovations.

The resolution of the CMOS image sensor is 12.3 Mega pixel (E-420 and E-520: 10 MP), for image processing, the camera with the newer TruePic III + processor is equipped for the first time in the E-30 was used and achieved a color depth of 12 bits per channel in image signal processing. Series recordings can be made with up to 4 images per second, whereby the internal buffer memory takes 7 RAW or unlimited Large- JPEG images. The autofocus is based on the module of the E-3 and has 7 autofocus measuring fields with 5 double cross sensors. The brighter Hypercristall-III-LCD is a foldable and swiveling display with a diagonal of 2.7 inches, offered for the first time in the E-System entry-level segment, the resolution, however, remains at 230,000 pixels. The control elements on the left rear of the housing on the 4xx and 5xx models had to be relocated due to the change on the LCD and are now mainly located on the right rear of the housing. A new element that appears for the first time in a DSLR and is therefore currently the unique selling point of the E-620, are illuminated buttons that are supposed to make operation easier in the dark.

In contrast to the previous models, the E-620 also has a faster live image autofocus. This enables the display of the current recording area on the LCD - similar to what is known from compact digital cameras - as well as the possibility of displaying multiple exposures directly. The E-620 also adopts the 6 art filters known from the E-30: Pop Art , Soft Focus , Light Tone , Pale Color , Grainy B / W film , Pinhole camera . The E-620 uses the Bls-1 Li-Ion battery known from the E-4xx series and is therefore related to the 4xx series in terms of size, but has an integrated image stabilizer and is thus and the other equipment features in the product Lineup of the E-System between the E-520 and E-30. According to Olympus, it was the smallest DSLR with an integrated image stabilizer when it was released.

Art filters

The E-620 can use 6 synthetic filters. The filters change the colors and gradation depending on the selected type. The following options are available.

  • Pop art: oversaturates the colors and is based on the viewing habits of Pop Art .
  • Soft focus: especially softens bright areas of the picture
  • Pale colors: Converts strong colors to pastel tones
  • Soft light: Reduces the contrast within an image
  • Coarse-grained B / W film: Imitates coarse-grained analogue monochrome films
  • Pinhole camera: vignettes the corners

Awards

The E-620 received the TIPA 2009 Award for the best "Entry Digital SLR".

Model E-600

In November 2009, a low-volume version of the E-620 with the designation E-600 was launched on the market. Compared to the E-620, the E-600 model lacks the infrared interface for the remote control, the artificial filters “Pale colors”, “Soft light” and “Coarse-grained black and white film”, the options for multiple exposure, the setting options for the aspect ratio of the recording and the illuminated buttons. This camera can also be remotely controlled with the Olympus Studio 2 software.
