OnGameNet Starleague
The OnGameNet Starleague ( OSL ) was a series of tournaments in the real-time strategy game StarCraft: Brood War , and later in StarCraft 2 . It was held between 2000 and 2013, with around three editions per year. A total of 35 editions of the tournament were played (33 in StarCraft: Brood War and two in StarCraft 2).
The tournament was hosted by the South Korean television broadcaster OnGameNet (OGN) in cooperation with the Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA). Record winners are the players Lee Yoon-yeol ( Nickname : NaDa ), Park Sung-joon (July) , Lee Jae-dong (Jaedong) and Lee Young-ho (Flash) with three titles each.
background
StarCraft developed into a popular spectator sport in South Korea in just a few years in the early 2000s. Even before the parallel MBCGame Starleague (MSL), the OSL was considered the most prestigious individual tournament in professional StarCraft. In addition, there was the Proleague as a team competition, which from 2005 was jointly organized by the competing channels OGN and MBCGame.
2012 saw the transition from StarCraft: Brood War to StarCraft 2, which appeared in 2010. By this time the game had already passed the zenith of its popularity, among other things due to a betting manipulation scandal and legal disputes with Blizzard Entertainment . After two editions, there were no more OSLs in StarCraft 2. The main focus of the station has since been on the game League of Legends . However, the Sonic StarLeague sponsored by shoe manufacturer Sbenu began in StarCraft: Brood War on OGN at the end of 2014 , albeit on a smaller scale.
format
A tournament began with a pre-qualification in which the field was reduced to 16 players. These 16 players were then divided into four groups of four. The top two players from each group qualified for the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards, the knockout system was used . The quarter-finals took place in the "Best of 3" mode and the semi-finals and final in the "Best of 5" mode. The cards on which the games were played changed several times over the years.
Most of the games were played in OGN's studio in Seoul, while the final and some of the quarter and semi-finals took place in different locations in front of several thousand spectators.
In the last two competitions with StarCraft 2 (2012/13), the "Best of 7" mode was used.
Detailed tournament overview
The following table lists all removed OSLs chronologically. As far as is known, the prize money (2000 to 2012 in won , 2013 in US dollars ), the venue of the finals and the teams and breeds chosen by the finalists are also given.
Remarks:
- T = Terran , P = Protoss, Z = Zerg (denotes the StarCraft race that the player in question specializes in)
- In the period in question, € 1 was roughly equivalent to ₩ 1,000–2,000.
