Only the Strong is an American martial arts - action movie of 1993 with Mark Dacascos in the lead role of Louis Stevens. It was directed by Sheldon Lettich , who previously directed films such as Leon and Balled Load - Double Impact .

action

Louis Stevens is a former Green Beret who quit his job because of a failed mission to arrest a drug lord. He decides to return to his hometown, Miami , and attend Lincoln High School . Louis visits his old teacher Kerrigan, who once taught him himself and is now unmotivated. Apparently more than 60% of all students are armed. Drugs are sold during school lessons and street fights are common. When Louis is attacked by two students, he can defend himself using the Brazilian martial art of capoeira .

The principal gives some students a chance to earn respect by being trained by Louis. At first most of them are not interested. But when Stevens turns a shabby black youth into a fighter over an afternoon, the others also begin to participate - except for Orlando Aliveres, whose cousin Silverio is a drug dealer and the boss of a notorious street gang. When Louis visits Orlando to persuade him one last time, Silverio bursts in and defeats Louis in a duel. He says, however, that Stevens should train Orlando so that he can come to his cousin's school according to the easiest rules. Louis, who has already earned respect at school, falls in love with the teacher Diana. On the evening of the fight, the two get closer. During the course of the film, Louis and Orlando become steadfast friends, so that Orlando ignores Silverio's orders and the high school is set on fire. A student suffocates in the smoke.

Louis Silverio then declares a private war. The following night he decimated Silverio's private army one after the other until he was finally caught and defeated by the majority. Louis is brought to Silverio. The two fight one last time, which is waged with machetes . Louis can decide this for himself. The winner lets Silverio live so that Orlando's testimony can bring him to prison.

Others

  • In Only the Strong , Mark Dacascos plays a capoeira master. In fact, he also learned this martial art, but has no master degree. In reality, Mark has a master's degree in Wun Hop Kuen Do, a martial art that Mark's father Al Dacascos put together from various street fighting styles .
  • Only the Strong's alternate title was actually The Street Fighters . However, it was changed shortly before filming began.

Kino.de praises "the originality of the dance-like martial arts variant full of impressive leaps".

At Rotten Tomatoes , the film convinced 77 percent of the audience.
