Surname

According to tradition, the Celts are said to have called the watercourse "Ausawa", which means something like shiny or brightly shining water.

geography

source

The source area of the Oos is located on the northern slope of the Eierkuchenberg in the northern Black Forest , near the almost 700 meters high Waldgasthaus Scherrhof. Several small, mostly nameless streams merge in this area to form the Oos. The two largest streams are named Scherrbach and Kälberwasser. The headwaters are an important source of drinking water, which is stored in elevated water tanks.

course

Around 430 meters of difference in altitude have to be covered from the headwaters northwards until the Oos passes the Forellenhof near Gaisbach and makes its way westwards through the valley.

It flows through Oberbeuern and past the south side of the Lichtenthal monastery and then the Lichtentaler Allee in Baden-Baden is crossed by a number of artistically crafted footbridges.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the Oos flowing in this section of the valley was divided into different arms. On August 1, 1851, the mostly harmless body of water swelled massively after a downpour, washing tree trunks and parts of houses that destroyed the city's bridges. An emergency bridge at the Hôtel d'Angleterre made it possible for the spa guests to reach the conversation house and the casino .

This disaster triggered the correction and containment of the Oos. She received her bed that still exists today.

In Baden-Baden, after the Lichtentaler Allee and the Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa , the Oos flows through the Kaiserallee, past the Kurhaus , the pump room and the Hotel Europäische Hof , under the Hindenburgplatz and disappears at the level of the Festspielhaus to the intersection of Waldseestrasse and Eisenbahnstraße underground again.

From the Ooswinkel , the Oos flanks the Black Forest Road to the Oos district .

There, too, it was regulated in the 19th century. To eradicate a centuries-old swamp, the Oos was divided after 1851. Opposite the present Friedenskirche an arm was directed to the west to the Sandbach coming from the Bühler area. The second arm made its way north towards Sandweier .

Mouths

The westward Oos Canal is taken up by the Sandbach. The Sandbach flows into the Rhine south of Iffezheim .

The northward arm runs east past Sandweier to Rastatt - Niederbühl . From Sandweier onwards it is referred to as Ooser Landgraben . The Ooser Landgraben flows into the Murg in Rastatt above the Murg Bridge of the Rhine Valley Railway . The Murg flows into the Rhine near stone walls .

Tributaries

Source streams, tributaries of the 1st order and dividing arms, as far as they are named on the geodata viewer of the state of Baden-Württemberg, from the origin downwards. With lengths and partly catchment areas. With several larger 2nd order tributaries, especially the Grobbach, also indented in a downstream order under the receiving water.
