List of Beethoven's works
Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the first composers to add opus numbers to his works .
Hints
The current division of Beethoven's works into works with opus numbers (op.) And works without opus numbers (WoO) goes back to the music researchers Georg Kinsky and Hans Halm (1955). Some unfinished and unpublished works were also collected and cataloged by the Swiss musicologist Willy Hess (1957).
The directory of Kinsky and Halm was revised and supplemented by Dorfmüller, Gertsch, Ronge and Haberkamp in the years 1999–2014. The following list shows all of Beethoven's works according to this new list from 2014. The year of completion of the respective work is given in brackets. Since this year is often not known exactly and Beethoven also changed many of his works at a later date, these years are only to be understood as guidelines for chronological classification and not as exact dates.
When the Kinsky / Halm index was revised, it turned out that some of the compositions previously mentioned under 'Works with an opus number' or 'Works without an opus number' are incomplete or cannot be ascribed to Beethoven at all. For these works, Dorfmüller et al. the respective incipits have been removed from their original list and taken over into the book chapter 'Unreal and doubtful works' that has existed since Kinsky / Halm or summarized in the new chapter 'Unfinished Works'.
