The Orange School is a grammar school in the center of the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden .
history
The Orange School was founded on May 11, 1857 at the insistence of the town's tradespeople as a high school for boys aged 10 to 16. The school was originally located on the second floor of the school building on the market . New construction was initiated in the Nassau era. On Oranienstrasse, the current location, an elongated school area was built between 1866 and 1868 based on designs by Wiesbaden city architect Alexander Fach , which was inaugurated on May 4, 1869. In 1879 the school was expanded into a seven-class upper secondary school and in 1905 into a secondary school based on the Frankfurt curriculum . This makes it the third oldest grammar school in Wiesbaden after the Dilthey School and the Gutenberg School . In 1956 the school was given its current name, the Orange School . Girls have also been accepted since 1976.
building
The generously proportioned building consists of a three-storey structure that was set back on Oranienstrasse. The facade is structured by a gabled, five-axis central projection. The school building, which was badly damaged in 1945, was rebuilt after the Second World War. Because of its historical, artistic and urban significance, the entire school area was placed under monument protection.
On July 15, 1946, the constituent meeting of the state assembly of Greater Hesse , advising the constitution, took place in the auditorium .
