The Oshkosh Joint Light Tactical Vehicle , shortly Oshkosh JLTV , ( dt. : Oshkosh Common lightweight military vehicle ) is after several years of development and selection process by the US Army and the States United Marine Corps in 2015 jointly chosen, light, off-road and protected military vehicle, which will replace the all-terrain Humvee, which is not protected in its original design, in the procurement period 2018 to 2040 for most purposes . The total procurement package by 2040 includes 54,599 vehicles, 5,500 for the Marines and 49,099 for the Army, valued at $ 30.04 billion. Also upfront was $ 980 million in research and development.
The manufacturer Oshkosh Defense , a subsidiary of the Oshkosh Corporation in Oshkosh (Wisconsin) , which specializes in special and military vehicles , prevailed with the design against the competing BRV-O designs from AM General , the manufacturer of the Humvee , and JLTV from Lockheed Martin Corp. ., which started in cooperation with the armaments company BAE Systems . The first partial order comprises 16,901 vehicles for $ 6.7 billion, including the total order for the US Marines for 5,500 vehicles.
The vehicle is available in a two-man version as a utility (JLTV-UTL) with a load capacity of 2.3 tonnes (5100 pounds) and in two four-man versions, the general purpose (JLTV-GP) for general transport purposes and as a close combat weapons carrier (JLTV -CCWC), German about armed combat vehicle . with a payload of just over 1.5 tons (3,500 pounds).
Until it was selected as the US Armed Forces' JLTV, Oshkosh referred to the vehicle as a Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV) .
properties
Loadability
Unlike the Oshkosh M-ATV, due to its external dimensions and weight, the Oshkosh JLTV can be transported with the Hercules C-130 transport aircraft of the US Air Force and can also be airlifted with the Army’s CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter and the CH-53 Super Stallion of the marines. Its weight makes it suitable for the amphibious ships of the US Navy, even in large numbers .
protection
The vehicle is said to be just as effective against mines , booby traps and ambush attacks (mine-resistant, ambush-protected MRAP ), as is the significantly heavier MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle , M-ATV for short , which the US armed forces procure from Oshkosh had when the Humvee proved to be too unsafe for the war in Afghanistan and especially the Iraq war , despite subsequent armor armor . In the first four months of 2006 alone, during the height of the uprising in Iraq, 67 US soldiers died from bomb explosions in Humvees.
In addition to the protective elements built into the basic vehicle (which are referred to as A-Kit), the Oshkosh JLTV is equipped from the outset with mounting options for additional protective elements and armor, and also designed for their weight. These attachable protective elements are collectively referred to as a B-Kit. A-Kit Stanag Level 1 / B-Kit Stanag Level 3. This configuration offers very good protection if necessary, but also allows you to do without it in safe areas for weight reasons.
Driving characteristics
With its powerful Duramax diesel engine and the TAK-4i® independent suspension from Oshkosh, the Oshkosh JLTV achieves a road speed of 112 km / h (70 mph) and very good off-road mobility. An active suspension system also enables the ground clearance to be adjusted by 50 cm (20 inches ); the chassis can therefore be lowered for better road holding or raised for better off-road mobility. The predecessor Humvee originally also had excellent terrain properties, but lost them significantly due to retrofitted armor, as its body , chassis , braking system and engine were not designed for it. In addition, these modifications led to overloading of the Humvees, which significantly increased the already high effort for maintenance and repair of the vehicles.
The Oshkosh JLTV meets the requirements of a climbing ability of 60 percent (= 31 degrees), a tilting angle of over 30 percent and a climbing ability of 45 cm (18 inches). The turning circle of Oshkosh JLTV is despite its size at only 7.6 meters, its wading in salt water is 1.5 meters.
Environmental conditions
The car is designed to work in a temperature range of −40 to +52 ° C and works at altitudes of over 3,600 meters above sea level.
Additional equipment
To further increase security, the vehicle is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system , a fuel tank extinguishing system and several exit options for the crew.
engine
General Motors is supplying the Duramax engine for the vehicle . It is a heavy V8 diesel engine with a displacement of 6.6 liters that delivers up to 224 kW (305 hp) and 705 Nm of torque. The automatic transmission is from Allison Transmission .
Armament
All versions have four smoke throwers for self-protection .
The Close Combat Weapons Carrier (JLTV-CCWC) version can be supplemented with either a manned turret with the Browning M2 heavy machine gun or a remote-controlled weapon station of the CROWS ( Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station ) type . The weapon station can be equipped with various weapons such as the 40 mm Mk 19 machine grenade launcher or Browning M2, M240 or M249 SAW machine guns .
Some JLTVs are also expected to be equipped with the BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missile .
costs
The average total cost per unit for fiscal 2015 is approximately $ 677,000. Over the entire duration of the program, they are expected to decrease to $ 550,000.
