Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Oskar von Alvensleben (born February 18, 1831 in Benkendorf , municipality of Teutschenthal near Halle , † November 5, 1903 in Dresden ) was a German landscape painter .

family

Oskar von Alvensleben came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . He was the twelfth and youngest child of Canon Wilhelm von Alvensleben (1779–1838) from Kalbe (Milde) and his wife Sophie Günther (1784–1847) from Dresden. Gebhard von Alvensleben (1816–1895), musician and owner of the Gohliser Schlösschen near Leipzig , and the landowner and author Udo III. von Alvensleben (1823–1910) from Schollene were his brothers. Oskar von Alvensleben remained unmarried.

Life

He spent his childhood on the Gohlis estate near Leipzig, which his father had acquired in 1832. Nothing is known about his school education and studies. After 1850 he referred to himself as "Öconom" and dealt with landscape drawing in southern Germany and northern France . He also had musical inclinations and - like his brother Gebhard - tried his hand at compositions. In 1866 he took up residence in Dresden and studied at the local academy until 1874 . a. with Julius Hübner , Carl Gottlieb Peschel and Adolf Erhardt - interrupted by long study trips to Spain , on which numerous pencil sketches were made, some with Indian ink or watercolors, after which he painted watercolors . From 1871 he was a member of the Dresden Artists' Cooperative and also supported other artists. In further life he undertook extensive trips to southern Germany, Austria , the North and Baltic Seas and to Bohemia , where many landscape studies were made. In his house in Dresden he collected antique furniture and equipment with a great understanding of art . For the preservation of the castle ruins in Kalbe (Milde) he donated a larger sum, which is still reminiscent of a plaque on the restored gable of the Gebhardbaus. After his death he was buried in the family cemetery in Kalbe (Milde). Max Rödig painted a portrait of Oskar von Alvensleben in 1895 (see picture), which has been missing since 1945.
