family

Oswald at Munster in 1917 at Castle Falkenstein / Vogtland born
Oswald Münster grew until 1938 at Gut Kniestedt at Salzgitter in Lower Saxony on

He was the son of the professional officer and landowner Wladimir Ernst Graf zu Munster von Derneburg (1886-1954) and his wife Irmgard Gräfin zu Munster, born von Trützschler Freiin zum Falkenstein (1891-1967), during the First World War at Falkenstein Castle, the His mother's family seat. He had two siblings, the elder Alexandrine Sophie Luise Schröder, née. Countess zu Münster (1914–1990), and the younger Renata Irmgard Melanie Hartlaub, b. Countess of Münster (1921–1991).

His father, cousin of the writer and Salonnière Helene von Nostitz , a career officer in the Reichswehr until 1920 and a farmer from 1923, was loyal to the emperor and nationally oriented; he thought in terms of an officer. His mother was very well read, educated, and artistically gifted. In contrast to her father, she was more left-wing liberal, politically interested and socially engaged. She strongly advocated that her son should later visit a liberal, music-oriented, reform-educational country house of education .

The family lived on Gut Kniestedt near Salzgitter in Lower Saxony . In 1938 this family seat was expropriated with all of the land because the Reichswerke AG for ore mining and ironworks "Hermann Göring" wanted to force the expansion of ore mining there in view of the war planned by Adolf Hitler . The family therefore moved to Winnerod near Gießen in Hesse , again to an estate with agriculture.

In June 1943, Oswald zu Münster married his former classmate Juliane Bieber (* 1922), whom he had met during his school days in Marienau. With her he had his first daughter, Verena, in autumn 1944. The marriage ended in divorce in 1947. In December 1951 he married the doctor Irmgard Maus (* 1919). The two had two daughters, Bettina in 1952 and Gesine in 1958. The couple separated in 1964. In July 1973, Oswald zu Münster married the artist Erika Winsch (* 1915).

Childhood and youth

Oswald zu Münster first went to the Gutenberg School in Karlsruhe, then to the secondary school in Salzgitter, before he attended the School by the Sea, founded by Martin Luserke on the North Sea island of Juist , from Easter 1931 to Easter 1934 . There he played the cello in the school orchestra under the direction of Eduard Zuckmayer , whose ten-member comradeship of the "Delphine" he was most recently a member. With his schoolmate Günther Leitz , the youngest son of Ernst Leitz II , and with Zuckmayer, Oswald zu Münster developed a lifelong friendship.

When the Schule am Meer was closed on Easter 1934 against the background of the National SocialistGleichschaltung ”, he moved with ten other of his classmates from Juist to the reformed educational rural education home School Marienau in Dahlem , where he was part of the comradeship of headmaster Max Bondy .

On the occasion of his 18th birthday on February 3, 1935, which he celebrated at the Marienau school , he received a Leica IIIa , the first reporter camera with 1 / 1000s exposure time, from his friend Günther Leitz . This marked the beginning of a passion for documentary photography that lasted over six decades.

period of service

After receiving his school-leaving certificate , Oswald zu Münster had to do the Reich Labor Service (RAD) for seven months in the Unterbernhards camp near Hilders in the Rhön . He recorded this time in a photo documentary as well as the other stages of his life.

“I won't be free again until the end of September 1939. [...] I think back to the last six years in Juist and Marienau. This helps. I probably have a bit ahead of most of my future comrades: Six years of community life in country school homes around the clock - a good prerequisite for camp life. "

After being drafted into the Wehrmacht , he was trained as a radio operator from 1937 to 1940 by the air intelligence service . During the Second World War , he was employed in this capacity with the rank of sergeant for the air intelligence force in France in 1940, from June to November 1941 in Poland and the Soviet Union , between 1942 and 1945 in Germany, France , the Soviet Union , the Ukraine , and Bohemia and Croatia .

activity

Parallel to his recordings, he noted his impressions in notebooks and diaries and thus became a chronicler who recorded the impressions of a person of his year for his peers and future generations. From 1935, he took photos for around six decades until the mid-1990s, always with a Leica . His main job was as a farmer on the family estate in Winnerod until 1958 and later for a large insurance company. In 1973 his book on sports photography was published . From 1985 he sifted through and sorted his extensive documentary photo collection with notes and diary entries. Another book publication became apparent, but he could no longer realize it. He died at the age of 86. His youngest daughter Gesine took over the very extensive collection of photos, notebooks and diaries in order to preserve them and publish excerpts.
