Marion "Mari" Otberg (born June 12, 1969 in Stuttgart ) is a German fashion designer , visual artist and illustrator .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a tailor at the Steilmann textile company , Mari Otberg studied fashion design and illustration in Bremen and Hamburg. From 1997 to 2001 she lived in London, where she was Vivienne Westwood's assistant in 1997 . She also worked as an illustrator for British magazines. In 1998 she founded her own model brand JustMariOt . In London, she happened to meet American fashion critic Suzy Menkes on a taxi ride together , who photographed Otberg with her digital camera and then discussed her designs in the International Herald Tribune . In 2001 she presented her collection entitled "Pearl in a Battlefield" at the Goethe-Institut in London.

In 2002 she moved her company headquarters and the showroom of her label to Berlin. From 2006 she presented her fashion at the Berlin Fashion Week . She gave her collections titles such as "Mephistos Muse," "Mental Millionaires" or "I want to be ... Sans Souci". Her clothes "tell cheerful stories from happy times", says Bettina Musall in Der Spiegel . When you buy an Otberg dress, you first and foremost acquire an attitude towards life. Otberg's fashion has been sold in Japan, Italy, Great Britain and New York and has been worn by actresses Susan Sarandon and Jessica Schwarz , among others . On the occasion of the Berlin Fashion Week 2007, in honor of the style icon Isabella Blow , who died in the same year and who she had seen London herself, she presented her collage No more blow , a “suicide story made of photos ,” together with the photographer Mariano Scopel and the curator Marcel Hertel and graphics ”.

Under pressure from the hotel company Marriott Mari Otberg had 2008 her label justMariOt give up because of the name similarity. Since then she has devoted herself to her artistic work, which includes book illustrations, drawings, hand embroidery and tapestries. In Vienna she designed the displays for the Demel and labels for Vöslauer . She designed t-shirts and condom packs for the benefit of the German AIDS Foundation. In 2013, in the exhibition Well Grounded: Experiments in Contemporary Rug Art, her tapestries could be seen alongside works by Daniel Buren , Jan Kath and others in the Stilwerk Design Gallery in the Stilwerk in Hamburg.

For Michael Stavarič's novel Kingdom of Shadows she created “surreal-looking illustrations”. In 2013, Anja Hirsch wrote in Die Zeit : "The artist prances with her slightly distorted perspectives and pencil-fine image sections on the false floor that the author has prepared for her with his texts."

Mari Otberg lives and works as a freelance artist in Berlin.
