Mjolden Sogn (German Medolden ) is a parish municipality (Danish Sogn ) in North Schleswig , Denmark . It is located northwest of the town of Tønder (Eng. Tondern ). Since 1970 it has belonged to the municipality of Skærbæk (Ger. Scherrebek ) and became part of the greater municipality of Tondern with the municipal reform in 2007 .

Municipal area

With an area of 17.3 km², Medolden is one of the smaller communities in North Schleswig and is inhabited by a total of 202 people (as of January 1, 2020). As a result, the community has lost over 100 residents in the last 40 years.

The community lies on two relatively flat tongues , which are separated from each other by the lowland of the Breder Au, one of the largest watercourses in the region. In the smaller southern part around the village of Vorballum, which is connected to Randerup , the highest elevation is only five meters. To the north of the Au the land height does not exceed eight meters either. To the north of the church village there is a smaller marshland area, further to the west a larger, almost uninhabited marshland.

Apart from a few individual places, the inhabitants of the parish live almost exclusively in the villages of Ottersbüll (also Ottesbüll, in the northeast), Medolden (in the east) and Vorballum (in the southwest, on the left of the Breder Au). During the Prussian period the three villages formed independent municipalities, but the small Vorballum was soon incorporated into Medolden.

Neighboring municipalities are in the west of Ballum , in the north of Skærbæk , in the east Døstrup (dt. Döstrup ) and in the south Randerup and at one point Brede .

history

Although no traces of Stone Age settlement were found in the area of the municipality, there were numerous relics from the Iron Age, including traces of a Roman settlement near Ottersbüll and urn graves near Medolden and Vorballum.

Originally, a large part of the community Mjolden belonged to the judicial and administrative district of the Lo harde . In the 13th century, most of the parish came into the possession of the Bishop of Ripen . Since this was a Danish imperial prelate, these properties came to the Kingdom of Denmark in the 15th century and not, like the surrounding area, to the Duchy of Schleswig . The latter only included that part of the community that belonged to the Lügumkloster or the Hadersleben (Hvidingharde) office .

After the Reformation, the episcopal property was subordinated to the aristocratic Troiburg estate, which was previously also a bishop's property, but remained part of the kingdom as an enclave. In the 19th century the name Loharde was reintroduced after the landlords had lost their jurisdiction.

After the war of 1864 the entire community came to Prussia and in 1867 was divided into three rural communities in the Tondern district. In the referendum on February 10, 1920, 227 residents voted for Denmark and only seven for Germany. Until the municipal reform in 1970 Mjolden remained an independent parish in the Tondern office . Since then it has belonged to the municipality of Skærbæk in Sønderjyllands Amt . In 2007 it became part of the greater Tønder municipality .
