Otto William Frello (born April 6, 1924 in Outrup , a suburb of the city of Varde ; † March 24, 2015 ) was a Danish painter , graphic artist , comic artist and illustrator .

Career

After graduating from school, he took up an apprenticeship in the painting trade in Billum . From the mid-1940s he took several drawing courses in Copenhagen in order to train himself from painter in handicraft to artistic painter. In 1948 he moved permanently to Copenhagen, where he graduated from high school. He then studied art history for a few years and at the same time took various drawing and painting courses. After graduating, he became a teacher himself at the Copenhagen Art School and taught various drawing subjects to students for 16 years. From 1960 he took over the management of the academy himself together with a colleague. Due to the very extensive work with illustrations and drawings for six manuals of the well-known Danish politics Forlag , he gave up the management of the art school in 1967. At this time, his focus was on artistic book design. He also devoted himself extensively to oil painting , artistic drawings, graphics and watercolors for galleries and exhibitions . Otto Frello has presented his artistic work at various exhibition venues and galleries in Denmark, most recently in Copenhagen in 2009. Many of his works can also be seen in a permanent exhibition in the Varde Museum of his birthplace. Frello has now been included in the Danish Weilbach's artist lexicon, which is updated about every 40 years .

With the creation of the first comic about the Olsen Gang , he achieved further notoriety beyond the art scene. After the script for the fourth film in this series, The Olsen Gang and their big coup , he published this comic in 1977 in Borgen Forlag under the original Danish title of the same name, Olsen-bandens store kup . The album was published in 2008, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Olsen Gang, in the Holzhof-Verlag Dresden with extensive additional and background material also in German.

Honors

In 2004 Otto Frello received the Eurocon Award in the “Best Artist” category. In Varde, near the former St. Jacobi School and St. Jacobi Church, a square (Otto Frellos Plads) was named after Otto Frello.
