Otto Werner (garden architect)
Ernst Hugo Otto Werner (born March 17, 1854 in Freiburg in Silesia ; † May 7, 1923 in Chemnitz ) was a German art gardener, garden architect and city garden director of Chemnitz.
Life
Otto Werner was born in 1854 in Freiburg in Silesia , then part of Prussia . At the age of 14, he began a three-year training course as an art gardener in the Fürstenstein palace garden in 1868 and then got a job in a Berlin gardening company . However, he soon gave up this activity because he got a job at the Botanical Garden Berlin-Schöneberg . From 1873 to 1875 Werner was drafted into the military and then got a job as senior assistant in the Great Garden in Dresden under director Friedrich Bouché . During his six years in Dresden, he rose to become head gardener. His application for the position of city gardener of Chemnitz, which became vacant in 1882, was successful from 110 applicants, and so Werner worked as the chief city gardener in Chemnitz from 1882 until his death in 1923. The city awarded him the title of garden inspector for his successful activities in 1895 and elevated him to the position of city gardening director in 1900. In addition to his work as city garden director, he also worked as a judge and expert. His main leitmotif was:
"A city administration cannot be eager enough to contribute to cleaning the city air by maintaining old trees and green spaces"
Werner died on March 7, 1923 in Chemnitz. His wish to be buried in the city park was not fulfilled, instead he was buried in the castle cemetery.
Works
One of Werner's main merits is that the industrial city of Chemnitz is one of the greenest cities in Germany today. The green spaces he created still shape large parts of the Chemnitz cityscape today. 14 large representative green spaces alone were created under his direction, as well as numerous avenues and smaller horticultural green areas. The urban green spaces were expanded from twelve to 210 hectares during his tenure. Part of the city park still bears the name Otto Werner Garten today .
