Wilhelm August Otto von der Schulenburg (born December 2, 1834 in Berlin , † January 5, 1923 in Göttingen ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

origin

Otto came from the old Markian nobility of the Schulenburg family . He was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von der Schulenburg (1788–1866) and his wife Henriette Charlotte, née von Bomsdorff (1798–1889). His younger brother Werner (1836-1903) also embarked on a military career and made it up to lieutenant general .

Military career

Schulenburg attended secondary school in Frankfurt (Oder) and then high school in Dessau in his youth . From May 1847 he was then a cadet in Potsdam and four years later in Berlin. On April 29, 1854, he was transferred to the 27th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . From October 1, 1859 to July 31, 1862 he was commanded for further training at the military academy . Schulenburg was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on December 13, 1860 . In 1864 he took part in the siege and storming of the Düppeler Schanzen during the German-Danish War .

In the further course of his military career, Schulenburg was appointed as a colonel on January 13, 1885, commander of Infantry Regiment No. 129 . On February 5, 1887 he was placed à la suite of the regiment and appointed commander of Sonderburg-Düppel. Schulenburg received on August 18, 1888 the character of Major General and on September 10, 1890 the Order of the Crown, 2nd class, for his long service. On November 17, 1892, he was finally put up for disposal with a pension under the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves . On the occasion of his 60th anniversary in service, Wilhelm II awarded him the star of the Order of the Crown, 2nd class on April 29, 1914.

Schulenburg married Hedwig Katharine Luise Hanssen (1845–1932) on May 25, 1867 in Berlin. She was the daughter of the economist and agricultural historian Georg Hanssen (1809-1894) and his wife Maria. The following children were born from the marriage:
