PJ Perry
Paul John "PJ" Perry (born December 2, 1941 in Calgary ) is a Canadian musician ( alto & tenor saxophone , flute , clarinet , composition ) of modern jazz .

PJ Perry, the son of tenor saxophonist Paul Guloien (who used the stage name Paul Perry ), began his musical career as an alto saxophonist in his father's band when he was 14 years old. Within a year, PJ Perry was freelancing in Vancouver. Despite several offers to play in the US (including from Terry Gibbs when he was 18), Perry spent most of his career in Canada, with a few brief stints in Europe. He worked with leading Canadian jazz musicians, a. a. at Rob McConnell ’s Boss Brass , with Oliver Jones , Ron Collier , Sonny Greenwich , Maury Kaye , Cory Weeds and Tommy Banks. According to Allmusic , he combined aspects of the playing of Art Pepper , Sonny Stitt and Phil Woods in his own passionate style. Under his own name he recorded a number of albums for CBC, Gramaphone, Little Mountain Records, Unity (1989), Jazz Alliance (1990) and Justin Time (2000). In the field of jazz, he was involved in 50 recording sessions between 1966 and 2018, according to Tom Lord .
Awards
PJ Perry received the 1993 Juno Award for Best Jazz Recording for his album My Ideal and for seven years he received the Jazz Report magazine 's Critic's Choice Award for best alto saxophone performance. PJ Perry's album with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra received a Juno nomination. In 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta . In 2016, PJ Perry was awarded the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston .
