Pacollo (also Socosani ) is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Pacollo is the central place of the canton Pacollo in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Coroico in the province of Nor Yungas . The municipality is located at an altitude of 1148  m on the Río Huarinilla, which joins five kilometers downstream with the Río Elena to the Río Coroico and continues over the Río Kaka to the Río Beni .

Pacollo lies in a valley on the eastern edge of the Cordillera Real in the Bolivian Yungas , a transition region between the Andean highlands ( altiplano ) and the tropical lowlands of the Amazon - rainforest . Pacollo is 89 kilometers by road northeast of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 3 leads to Cotapata , where the old Yungas road ( "Ruta de la muerte" - road of death) branches off to Coroico to the east. The new route of Ruta 3 leads from here through the San Rafael tunnel in a northerly direction to Santa Bárbara and on via Caranavi , Yucumo and San Ignacio de Moxos to Trinidad on the Río Mamoré . A few kilometers before the expanded Ruta 3 reaches the valley floor on the Río Huarinilla, an unpaved road branches off to the northwest, which reaches Pacollo after three kilometers .

Pacollo is the end point of the Choro Trek , an old Inca path that can be reached from La Paz via the La Cumbre pass (4727 m) and the Abra Chucura pass (almost 5000 m) and from Challapampa via the settlement of Korisamaña (Chairo) the Río Huarinilla down to Pacollo. With the hotel "Río Selva", the infrastructure of the place and the use of the Choro Trek have been significantly upgraded over the past decade.
