Paolo De Matteis (born February 9, 1662 in Piana del Cilento , † July 26, 1728 in Naples ) was an Italian painter of the high and late Baroque .

Life

He enjoyed his training in Naples first with Francesco di Maria and then with Luca Giordano . In Rome he continued his education in the workshop of Giovanni Maria Morandi . Back in Naples he worked for the court of the viceroy and was active as a painter of panels and frescoes for churches in Naples, Calabria and Genoa . The correct drawings of his paintings, his delicate coloring and the speed of his work were praised ; he is said to have painted the dome of the Gesù Nuovo church in Naples within two weeks (not received).

1702 to 1705 he was appointed to the court of the Dauphin Louis de Bourbon in France . Further assignments took him to Austria , Spain , England and again France. From 1723 to 1725 he was at the invitation of Pope Innocent XIII. worked in Rome, then he took up residence again in Naples.

Paolo De Matteis had numerous students and employees, such as his daughters Emmanuella, Felice and Mariangela as well as Inazio de Oliveira , Giuseppe Mastroleo , Nicolas de Filippi Bernardo Peresi and the brothers Francesco, Gennaro, Giovanni and Antonio Sarnelli .
