During the Second World War , Belgian paratroopers and volunteer commandos were formed in Great Britain. The Commandos were part of the famous SAS Regiment (5th SAS), while the paratroopers were under the British 6th Parachute Division . In 1952 the command and parachute battalion were merged to form the Para-Commando regiment . In 1955 a 3rd battalion was set up in the Belgian Congo to safeguard Belgian interests in the region. The battalion was transferred to Belgium in 1962 . Reinforced by additional support units, the regiment became the Para-Commando- Brigade in 1991 . From 1994 to 2002 she was part of the Multinational Division Central (MND-C) of NATO.
The names Para and Commando have a traditional character. The units have the same training. The 2nd Commando Battalion is recruited from Francophone Belgians. A successful parachutist course and the command course are prerequisites for soldiers of the combat units in the Para-Commando-Brigade.
