The Parapluieberg ( 562  m above sea level ) is a mountain in the southern Vienna Woods in Lower Austria .

It is located in the west of the municipality of Perchtoldsdorf and, with the Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus and the surrounding Föhrenberge Nature Park, is a popular local recreation area.

The properties on Parapluieberg are owned by the market town of Perchtoldsdorf.

Surname

The mountain is named after Schwarzföhren , whose branches do not form a pointed top , but rather grow in width like an umbrella (umbrella pine). Such trees are in the area of Parapluieberges repeated before and after the French word parapluie [ pa.ʁa.plɥi ] for (rain) umbrella as Parapluiebäume referred. The name of the mountain is derived from it. One of these trees is under nature protection.

geology

The Parapluieberg consists mainly of dolomite (so-called main dolomite from the Karn to Nor ). The rock is over 200 million years old. Limestone areas are located in the north and west . Geologically, the Parapluieberg is one of the northernmost foothills of the Northern Limestone Alps . On its western flank are former quarries where stone was extracted for cement production. The cement plant in the neighboring municipality of Kaltenleutbaren to the west is closed.

The limestone in the west of the Parapluieberges is so-called aptychen limestone , lime marl . It is a sedimentary rock from the transition period between Jurassic and Cretaceous , which is 130 to 150 million years old ( Tithon to Untereokom ). It comes from the Tethys in the Mesozoic Era . Between the main dolomite and the limestone there is a narrow layer of other, similar rocks: reef limestone, calcareous sandstone, etc. from the Mesozoic era ( Rhaet , Lias , Malm , etc.). The rock layers are known as "Schrambach Neokomaptychenschichten".

In the rock a number of fossils (was fossils ) found. The eponymous for the lime Aptychen are jaw parts of ammonites , which have also been interpreted as a closing cover of the Ammonites housing. They are characteristic fossil remains of the limestone that was formerly mined at Parapluieberg.

Because of the economic importance of limestone for the quarries, the different types of rock in a small area and the easy accessibility from the city of Vienna, the area has been geologically examined in detail and published about it.

According to the tectonic overview, the area belongs to the Höllenstein-unit of the Frankenfels-Lunzer cover system of the Northern Limestone Alps (Eastern Alps) . The Parapluieberg lies in the northeast spur of the Limestone Alps and is part of an arched rock formation (Höllenstein anticline ).

The rock series to which the Parapluieberg belongs runs to the east in the underground of the Vienna Basin . It is overlaid by the gravel of the Vienna basin just beyond the city limits of Vienna (Hochstraße area in Rodaun). Just a few kilometers behind it ( Meidling area ) it is in the Vösendorfer Depression over 1000 meters below the earth's surface, northwest of Vienna ( Aderklaa ) it can be found at a depth of 2500–3500 meters.

The dolomite of the Parapluieberg area comes partly from the north . This type of rock (“Noric part of the Perchtoldsdorfer dolomite”) has been identified as a gas-bearing reservoir by a 5435 meter deep borehole near Strasshof .

Ascent

The mountain can be easily reached on a number of marked hiking trails from almost all directions, with the exception of the north-west, where the rocks of the quarries are located.

The Parapluieberg is also on a forest road (closed to general traffic). This road begins in Perchtoldsdorf and leads over the ridge to which the Parapluieberg belongs, with various branches to Gießhübl and Sulz in the Vienna Woods . It is called "Schutzhüttenstraße" after the inns or shelters located next to it: Franz-Ferdinand-Schutzhaus, Kammersteiner Hütte, Teufelstein-Hütte, Gh. Kugelwiese, Gh. Seewiese and (burnt down in 2007, in operation again since 2009) Höllensteinhaus . For this street, the name “ Liechtenstein street” or “Höhenstraße” is used in everyday life after the former manorial rule .

A signposted mountain bike route leads over the mountain.

Kammerstein castle ruins

This ruin from the 13th century is located on the steep ascent to Parapluieberg from the Kaltenleutgenz valley.

Franz Ferdinand Refuge

Franz Ferdinand Refuge

This inn was built in 1905, renovated in 1985 and 1995 and connected to the water and sewer network. It is located in the west of Perchtoldsdorf at 532 m above sea level on Parapluieberg (Vorderer Föhrenberg). Its terrace offers a wide view of the south of Vienna, and on a clear day the Danube Bridge from Bratislava, approx. 60 km away, is clearly visible. Along with the Teufelsteinhütte and the Kammersteiner Hütte, the refuge is one of the three restaurants in the vicinity of the Vienna Woods near Perchtoldsdorf (the Rablhütte on the Perchtoldsdorfer Heide, still shown on maps, was demolished in the 1980s).

The building is a listed building .

Lechner Cross

The summit of the Parapluieberges lies a few hundred meters west of the Franz-Ferdinand-Hütte. There is a small wooden cross on it.
