Perfume is a German crime - television series based on motifs of the novel Perfume by Patrick Süskind . Directed by Philipp Kadelbach , the main roles include Friederike Becht , Wotan Wilke Möhring and Juergen Maurer . The series was shown as a world premiere on June 29, 2018 as part of the Munich Film Festival and had its TV premiere on November 14 on ZDFneo . Netflix has taken over international marketing . The series, which, in contrast to Süskind's novel, is set in the present, is about a series of murders and a group of five former boarding school students who experiment with human scents.

A woman's body is found on the Lower Rhine. Her red hair, pubic hair and armpit hair were removed. Investigators Nadja Simon and Matthias Köhler as well as public prosecutor Grünberg, with whom Nadja is having an affair, come across five former boarding school students. You know the victim from your school days and at that time experimented with human scents, inspired by the novel Das Parfum . In addition, the unsolved case of a boy who disappeared at the time comes into focus. When his body is found, it shows the same mutilations as the first victim. A prostitute is also murdered, she too is disfigured in the same way. Meanwhile, Nadja learns that she is pregnant from Grünberg. But he is not ready to leave his wife and wants an abortion. When she refuses, he ends the relationship.

The investigators can assign the murder of the student who was very popular at the time to the former boarding clique. They killed him to use his scent for themselves. Nadja can also solve the current murders, all also committed on very popular people. In doing so, she also got hold of the perfume obtained from these victims. Despite her doubts, she now uses it herself to bind the father of her unborn child to her.

The shooting took place between August 2, 2017 and December 5, 2017. The film was shot at Heessen Castle in Hamm , which served as the fictional St. Laurentius boarding school , at the Fiskusfriedhof in Duisburg and at Eibach Castle in Lindlar . Although the series is set on the Lower Rhine , it was not shot there. The majority originated in Cologne, in the Bergisches Land and in the High Fens near Aachen.

Reviews

The star writes of a top-class cast and says the series is “technically and aesthetically impressively staged.” Oliver Jungs from the FAZ also writes of “a splendid cast and (...) opulent pictures in yellow-greenish painting optics” as well as “coherent Rhythm between overview and intimacy, movement and tranquility, frosty elegance and warmth from a wood fire ”, but says that the series is“ too happy in the bubbling morass of blazing passions ”and writes of“ intrusiveness of the camera ”,“ cheesy romantic seriousness ”and“ little inner credibility ”.

Oliver Kaever from Spiegel Online even considers the series to be a "complete disaster" and says it looks "like conventional series television where you turned the color out and shot many sequences in slow motion by mistake."
