Paris, Paris - Monsieur Pigoil on the Road to Happiness is a 2008 French musical drama directed by Christophe Barratier .

action

Paris in 1936: Pigoil is charged with murder. In front of the officer who interrogated him, he told how the murder came about.

Pigoil is a stage worker at the small music theater "Chansonia" in the middle of the Parisian district of Faubourg Saint-Marcel . The New Year's Eve show is currently running in the theater , but business is bad and real estate agent Galapiat, who owns the building and who again receives no rent from the theater director, closes “Chansonia” right on time for the turn of the year.

A few months later: The vacant “Chansonia” expires, the former members of the troupe are unemployed and hardly know what to do with their time. Pigoil, whose wife has since separated from him, surrenders to the wine, the unionist Milou increasingly wants to stir up strikes among the workers and is being persecuted by the growing right-wing extremists, and the talentless voice imitator Jacky is busy rehearsing new programs with bad gags and turns himself in in vain at other revue theaters. Pigoil's son Jojo, who has lived with his father since his parents divorced, secretly earns money by playing the accordion and thus pays Pigoil's debts unnoticed. When the police pick up Jojo and give Pigoil's mother custody because of her unemployment, a world collapses for Pigoil. He wants to go back to work to bring Jojo back to himself.

When Jacky secretly converted the "Chansonia" into his illegal private stage and Milou decides that the theater should be occupied in a revolutionary way, Pigoil persuades the owner Galapiat to rent the theater to them - they want to pay with the entrance fees for the shows. Galapiat agrees. During a casting , the troupe discovered the young Douce, who had just come to Paris. It is true that Milou, in particular, is reserved, as Galapiat has already imposed himself on her as a protector, but Douce convinces the audience as a singer. It remains the only highlight in a revue program that is made amateurish and that soon attracts no viewers. The actors also become hostile to one another, as Jacky allows himself to be abused by the right-wing extremist Galapiat for his own purposes and presents his jokes at the right-wing extremist party meetings. More and more artists cancel the “Chansonia”, Pigoil refuses to do theater for the right-wing Galapiat, and Douce also follows a new offer on a bigger stage - she annoys both her patron Galapiat and Milou, with whom she has started a love affair Has.

Not far from “Chansonia” lives Max, whom everyone only calls Monsieur Radio because for years he has only sat in front of the radio in his apartment. He used to be the musical director of “Chansonia” and the lover of Douce's mother. She had to sleep with the person responsible there for her engagement in the “Chansonia” and was then pregnant with Douce. Monsieur Radio recognizes the daughter of his mistress in Douce and follows her to her engagement. On stage she sings one of his songs that her mother had taught her and Monsieur Radio plans, with her help, to make the "Chansonia" an important stage again. It is Douce who asks Galapiat to give the “Chansonia” staff a second chance. In return he wants her - as long as she cannot love him of her own free will, at least she should not have another lover. Meanwhile, Jojo is brought back to Pigoil by Milou and Jacky, who thereby regains his old courage to live.

The new Revue Faubourg 36 with the music of Monsieur Radios is a complete success. The troupe is offered tours, the shows are always sold out and the money flows in. Douce, however, does not give up her newly started affair with Milou, who spends the night at "Chansonia" every evening and watches over the entrance fees. On July 14, 1936 , the national holiday, Jacky takes over the guarding of the funds so that Milou and Douce can celebrate together. During the night, Galapiat's men attacked him, whom they believe to be Milou, and injured him so badly that he died shortly afterwards in hospital. Milou goes to Galapiat with a revolver, who knocks the gun away and in turn threatens him with a pistol. The rushing Pigoil shoots Galapiat with Milou's weapon.

Pigoil finishes describing the events that led to the murder. He was arrested and released from prison shortly after the war ended in 1945. His friends greet him with delight, but his first path leads to "Chansonia", where his grown son now has his own show. Pigoil never left the Faubourg until the end of his life.

production

Paris, Paris was filmed in Prague and Paris from July 8th to October 18th, 2007 . With the leading actor Gérard Jugnot, the director Christophe Barratier already had a commercial success in France in 2004 in the Franco-Swiss film The Children of Monsieur Mathieu . The street, in which most of the film takes place, was built as a set in a field near Prague for this purpose and was completely destroyed after filming. The interior of the theater was developed as a studio setting, as the complex film work in an existing theater did not seem feasible.

The film premiered on September 6, 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. The film was released in French cinemas on September 24, 2008 and was also shown in German cinemas from November 27, 2008.

Numerous songs can be heard in the film. The music comes from Reinhardt Wagner , the lyrics were written by Frank Thomas:

Gérard Jugnot and Pierre Richard had previously stood together in front of the camera in The Toy , A Clumsy On Astray and The Umbrella Murderer . At that time Richard played the main role and Jugnot in a supporting role. The SOC party is an invention of the screenwriter who, according to his own statement, composed it from various political streams from the time of the film.

criticism

The filmdienst called Paris, Paris as a "chanson ensemble comedy with lively-romantic music, captures the period atmosphere and environment admirably. A film that is also outstanding in terms of performance, in which the revue scenes alone do not find a real unity with the dark street scenes and exterior shots and private and political levels do not penetrate each other quite convincingly. "
