Parliamentary election in Lithuania 1996
The 1996 parliamentary elections in Lithuania took place on October 20 and November 10, 1996. It was the second choice in Lithuania, which has been independent since 1990.
Electoral system
137 seats in the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) were redefined. 67 were awarded proportionally to the parties that jumped the 5% hurdle (7% hurdle for list connections). The remaining 71 were given as direct mandates. The right to vote is thus a mixed system of majority voting and proportional representation , called the ditch voting system . The legislative period was 4 years.
Election result
The election winner was the Fatherland (Conservatives of Lithuania) (TS (LK)) party, which was founded three years ago . She got 31.34 percent of the vote from now on. The Christian Democrats of Lithuania (LKDP) came second with 10.43 percent. The third strongest force with high losses was the Democratic Labor Party of Lithuania (LDDP) with 10.01 percent.
