The 1986 Grand Prix was a snooker tournament belonging to the 1986/87 snooker season , which was played from October 18 to 26 at the Hexagon Theater in Reading , England . The main sponsor was the cigarette manufacturer Rothmans , which is why the tournament was officially called the Rothmans Grand Prix .
Rex Williams , a professional player since 1951, set a new record at 53 years and 98 days as the oldest player in the final of a ranking tournament. He was also in the final of a major ranking tournament for the first and only time in his career. Williams beat Alex Higgins in the round of 16, Steve Davis in the quarterfinals and Neal Foulds in the semifinals before losing 6:10 to Jimmy White in the final . White had just beaten 17-year-old Stephen Hendry in the quarterfinals 5: 4.
Alex Higgins clearly beat eight-time world champion Fred Davis 5-0. At 73, Davis was by far the oldest participant in the tournament.
