A total of 141 seats

The first round of parliamentary elections in Lithuania in 2008 took place on October 12, 2008 and the second round on October 26, 2008. In addition, a referendum was held on October 12, 2008 on the issue of extending the life of the Ignalina nuclear power plant .

Electoral system

The 141 seats in the Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas , stood for election . 70 seats were allocated proportionally to the parties that jumped the 5% hurdle (7% hurdle for list connections). The remaining 71 were given as direct mandates through constituencies.

Participating parties and candidates

1603 candidates from 22 parties in 16 coalitions competed for the 141 seats in parliament.

Election result

Only in 3 constituencies could applicants achieve the necessary 50% majority in the first ballot. The runoff election between the two first place winners in the other constituencies took place on October 26th.

Government formation

Ruling coalition

The governing coalition was subsequently formed from Tėvynės Sąjunga - Lietuvos krikščionys demokratai , Tautos prisikėlimo partija , Lietuvos Respublikos liberalų sąjūdis and Liberalų ir centro sąjunga , which - after joining factions - had a majority of 83 of the 141 seats. Andrius Kubilius from the Conservatives became the new Prime Minister .

On December 4, 2008, President Valdas Adamkus confirmed with his signature the new cabinet of the four-party coalition (the new government was sworn in on December 9, 2008):

In February 2009, the government was expanded to include a new Ministry of Energy, whose special task was to manage the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant at the end of 2009.
