Referendum in Lithuania 2012
The referendum in Lithuania 2012 on the question of building a nuclear power plant in Lithuania took place on October 14, 2012. The first round of the 2012 parliamentary elections was also held on the same day . The referendum was not legally binding on the government ( referendum ).
To the prehistory
From the end of 1983 (at that time Lithuania was still part of the Soviet Union ) to the end of 2009, the Ignalina nuclear power plant was in operation in Lithuania . It had two nuclear reactors of Russian design ( RBMK -1500) with a net output of 1185 MW each. Began in 1986 in Chernobyl , 490 km southeast of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius , the Chernobyl nuclear disaster . In the context of Lithuania's EU accession negotiations , the EU Commission requested the shutdown of the nuclear power plant for safety reasons.
Question
The question asked in the referendum was the following:
"Pritariu naujos atominės elektrinės statybai Lietuvos Respublikoje"
"I support the construction of a new nuclear power plant in the Republic of Lithuania."
Result
The referendum on power plant construction was rejected with 64.77 percent of the vote; 35.23 percent voted for it. The turnout was 52.58 percent.

consequences
On November 16, 2012, Prime Minister- designate Algirdas Butkevičius announced in view of the last referendum that the planned nuclear power plant would not be built. Butkevičius said: “The people expressed their will in the referendum and I want to follow that will”.
