The 2009 presidential election in Lithuania took place on May 17, 2009. In the first ballot, the former EU Commissioner Dalia Grybauskaitė was elected as the new head of state of Lithuania .
Candidates
The election commission registered a total of 14 candidates, seven of which were eliminated in advance, partly because the required 20,000 supporter signatures were not achieved. The entrepreneur Vladimiras Romanovas was turned down as a candidate because he was not born in Lithuania.

Survey results
According to the survey results, Dalia Grybauskaitė was the undisputed favorite of the election beforehand. It was therefore supported by around three quarters of the Lithuanian citizens.
