Parliamentary election in Lithuania 2000
The 2000 parliamentary elections in Lithuania took place on October 8, 2000.
Electoral system
141 mandates in the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) were redefined. 70 were proportionally awarded to the parties that jumped the 5 percent hurdle (7 percent hurdle for list connections). The remaining 71 were given as direct mandates. The right to vote is thus a mixed system of majority voting and proportional representation , called the ditch voting system . The legislative period was 4 years.
Election result
The election winner with 31.08 percent was the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP). The New Union (Social Liberals) (NS) landed in second place with 19.64 percent. The third strongest force was the Liberal Union of Lithuania (LLS) with 17.25 percent.
