Domenico Silvio Passionei
Domenico Silvio Passionei (born December 2, 1682 in Fossombrone , † July 5, 1761 in the Eremo di Camaldoli , Monte Porzio Catone ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Passionei went to Rome in 1695, where he studied philosophy at the Collegio Clementino and law at the La Sapienza University. During this time he was in contact with many scholars in Europe, including Protestants and Jansenists . In 1706 he was sent to Paris as a papal legate , where he stayed for two years. He then took part as an envoy of the Holy See at the Peace Conferences of The Hague in 1708 and Utrecht in 1712 in the Netherlands as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession .
After his return to Rome he became a prelate , but from 1717 to 1721 he retired to his estate in Fossombrone after he was refused the post of apostolic nuncio . Under the new Pope Innocent XIII. In 1721 he was appointed nuncio in Lucerne and titular archbishop of Ephesus . From 1730 to 1738 he was nuncio in Vienna . On June 23, 1738 he was accepted into the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Bernardo alle Terme . In 1741 he became deputy librarian of the Vatican Library under Angelo Maria Quirini , whom he succeeded in 1755 in the office of librarian. In 1755 he moved to the titular church of Santa Prassede , but also kept his previous titular church in commendam until 1761. In 1755 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences .
His extensive book collection with numerous manuscripts was purchased for the Biblioteca Angelica in Rome after his death in 1761 .
