Patrick Sean Wey (born March 21, 1991 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a former American ice hockey player who played nine games for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League in the course of his playing career between 2009 and 2015 on the position of defender has denied. Wey, who had a hugely successful career at Boston College , only stayed two seasons in the professional field and had to end his career early at the age of 24 due to multiple concussions .

Career

Wey spent the beginning of his junior years between 2007 and 2009 with the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League , after he had previously played underclass in his native Pittsburgh . The defender moved from the Waterloo Black Hawks to Boston College in the summer of 2009 . Previously, he had already been selected in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft 2009 in 115th place by the Washington Capitals from the National Hockey League . In Boston, Wey completed four successful years in the ice hockey team of the college in Hockey East , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Within four years, the team, which included Cam Atkinson , Chris Kreider and Johnny Gaudreau , won the Hockey East division title three times and the national college championship twice. In addition, the defender received various individual awards.

After completing his studies, Wey switched to the professional field in the 2013/14 season after he had been signed by the Capitals in spring 2013. During the season he was first used by the Reading Royals in the ECHL , but was ordered into the American Hockey League after only eight missions to the Hershey Bears , another Washington farm team . In December 2013, he finally made his debut for the capital club in the NHL, before he was sent back to Hershey after eight games. Due to several concussions within a short time, Wey only played 31 games in the AHL, of which only three were in the 2014/15 season . At the end of June 2015, at the age of 24, he announced his retirement from active professional sports due to the health consequences of the concussions.

International

Wey played for his home country at the U20 World Junior Championship 2011 , where he finished third with the US team. The defender remained pointless in six tournament games.
