Paul Brasack (born May 9, 1916 in Stettin , † March 11, 2013 in Bad Pyrmont ) was a German naval officer .

Life

Paul Brasack grew up in Greifswald as the son of the District Court Councilor Friedrich Brasack . He joined the Navy on September 21, 1937 and became an ensign at sea on April 1, 1938 .

In the world war

At the beginning of the Second World War , he took part in an observer training course at the Seeflieger Weapons School in Parow in September 1939 . On July 1, he was promoted to senior ensign and on August 1, 1939 to lieutenant at sea . In April 1940 he was assigned as an observer with the coastal aviation squadron 1./706 and from July 1940 worked as a squadron leader with I./KG 28 . From June 1941 he served in the staff of the IX. Fliegerkorps and was promoted to first lieutenant at sea in September of the same year . From March to August 1942 he completed his training as a submarine leader. On January 30, 1943 he became the commander of U 737 ( submarine class VII C) and completed a total of 23 patrols between July 20, 1943 and October 31, 1944. From the ports of Hammerfest , Harstad , Narvik , Trondheim , Tromsö and Bogenbucht , he was on patrol for 216 days. On July 1, 1944, he was promoted to lieutenant captain; between December 1944 and the end of the war in May 1945, he served as training manager in the 25th submarine flotilla . He fell at the surrender in Flensburg in captivity , from which he was released on 15 August 1947th

post war period

He joined the German Navy on October 1, 1957 in Flensburg with the rank of corvette captain . From 1961 to 1963 he was in command of Destroyer 2 , and from 1964 to 1968 he worked in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . From 1968 to 1971 he served as a naval attaché at the German embassy in Washington . From 1971 he served as a sea ​​captain as head of the Bundeswehr site command in Hamburg and retired in 1974. Paul Brasack lived in Bad Pyrmont until his death.
