Paul David Collingwood MBE (born May 26, 1976 ) is an English cricketer . Between 2007 and 2008 he was the captain of the English one-day team, and in T20Is he was also temporarily the captain of the English national team . He is also the captain of the Durham County Cricket Club .
Collingwood is an all-rounder with a focus as a batsman , especially in one-day cricket he is a reliable medium-pace bowler . Above all, however, he is considered to be one of the best field players worldwide and is usually in the position of a backward point or in his slips on the field . In a few cases he has also played as a substitute wicket keeper for England.
He made his first-class debut in 1996, his first appearances in the English team were in 2001 for the one-day team and in 2003 in the test team. However, it took two years, until the last test in 2005 , before he was able to secure a regular place in the test team. His highest test score with 206 runs during the 2006/07 Ashes Series in Australia was the first double-century English batsman in Australia in 78 years. Because of his three game- winning performances during the following Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia, he was hailed as a hero in the British press.
He was the captain of the English team, which was able to win a world tournament for the first time with World Twenty20 in 2010 . Collingwood is also the top player and runner in ODIs for England.
In January 2011, he announced his retirement from test cricket during the fifth test of the Ashes series . With the English team he won the Ashes for the third time this year , after England won the traditional international match against Australia 3-1 with three innings wins.
In 2007 he was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year , along with his English teammate Monty Panesar .
