Paul Degen (born March 24, 1941 in Basel ; † May 31, 2007 in Liestal ) was a Swiss illustrator , caricaturist , painter and sculptor .

He was best known for his cartoons for the New York Times and his 34 covers for The New Yorker magazine . He gained further fame in the 1990s with the invention of the Roma birth wheel .

Life

After training as a lithographer at Wassermann AG in Basel and graduating from the Basel Art School , Paul Degen continued his training in Paris in Theo Ballmer's graphic studio and at the Académie Julian . In the 1960s Paul Degen worked as a freelance graphic artist and illustrator for Herbert Leupin , Celestino Piatti , Fritz Bühler and the Atelier Eidenbenz in Switzerland. In 1970 he moved to New York and worked alongside his freelance cartoonist and illustrator for the New York Times , Esquire , Harper's Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly at Push Pin Studios with Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast . After stays in Brazil , Peru , Hawaii , Bali and his return to New York at the end of the 1980s, Paul Degen moved back to Liestal near Basel in 1990 . Paul Degen died on May 31, 2007 in Liestal as a result of an operation.
