Paul Knepler (born October 29, 1879 in Vienna , † December 17, 1967 there ; also Paul Knöpler ) was an Austrian librettist , composer and publisher .

Life

Paul Knepler was born as the fourth of five children (including brother Hugo ) to Moriz and Pauline Knepler. His father traded in tobacco pipes, which he also produced for the South American market.

After studying at the University of Vienna , he worked as a bank clerk. In 1905 he acquired the Wallishausser'sche k. u. k. Court bookstore on Hohen Markt . After 1910 Paul Knepler began working as a publisher. His publishing program was very diverse. In addition to medical and fictional first publications by Wilhelm Stekel , he published works by, among others, Alfons Bolz-Feigl , Friedrich Schreyvogl and Paul Hohenau . At the end of October 1916 he handed the bookstore and publishing house over to his brother Hugo.

Musically without any professional training, he composed two operettas with the help of a ghostwriter: Josefine Gallmeyer (premiered on March 22, 1921 at the Wiener Bürgertheater ) and Wenn der Hollunder blooms (premiered on July 1, 1924 at the Wiener Metropoltheater).

Knepler became more successful and better known as a librettist, among others for Eduard Künneke : Die enticing Flamme (1933), Robert Stolz : The lost waltz (1933, based on the sound film Two Hearts in Three-Four Time ); Oscar Straus : Three Waltzes (1935); Emmerich Kálmán : Empress Josephine (1936) and for Franz Lehár: Paganini (1925) and Giuditta (1934), which was probably his greatest success and with which his name is still known today.

After Austria's annexation on March 12, 1938, as a Jew, he and his wife had to emigrate to Great Britain. In London he became a board member of the Austrian Center and wrote and composed for the exile cabaret "Laterndl". He also worked on the culture papers, such as the cultural series of the Free Austrian Movement.

Not until 1955, shortly after his 75th birthday, did Knepler return to Austria.

His son was the musicologist Georg Knepler .
